Buyer’s comparison

Vertiv modular
data centers.

Vertiv makes much of the power and thermal equipment inside modern AI facilities, including prefabricated modules. QIT develops and integrates liquid-cooled GPU sites. Here is how the two fit together.

Does Vertiv build modular data centers?

Yes. Vertiv is best known as a supplier of critical infrastructure: power distribution, UPS systems, thermal management and monitoring. It also sells prefabricated modular data centers that package that equipment into factory-integrated units. Its modular solutions range from enclosure-sized systems for a few racks to OneCore, which Vertiv positions as a prefabricated data center for blocks of many megawatts.

For most buyers, the question is not “Vertiv or QIT”. An OEM such as Vertiv is often a supplier to the project; QIT is a project developer and integrator that scopes the site, the GPU platform and the delivery. The choice is between buying a module and running the integration yourself, or commissioning a scoped project that may include OEM equipment.

These are Vertiv’s published figures, not QIT specifications. Vertiv says MegaMod CoolChip can deploy up to 50% faster than an onsite build; treat that as a vendor claim and ask how it applies to your site and deployment schedule.

Vertiv SmartMod, MegaMod or Vertiv OneCore: which modular design fits?

Vertiv SmartMod: enterprise and edge capacity

Vertiv SmartMod Max is the most container-like product in the range. At up to 200 kW IT across about two dozen racks, it belongs with containerized data centers for enterprise, branch and edge capacity. It uses DX or chilled-water air cooling, so confirm the rack densities it supports before specifying it for GPU servers.

Vertiv MegaMod CoolChip: liquid-cooled AI rows

Vertiv MegaMod CoolChip adds direct-to-chip liquid cooling and CDUs to a prefabricated modular unit. It can retrofit an existing building or stand alone, which makes it relevant where a site has power but no suitable IT hall for high density compute.

Vertiv OneCore: multi-megawatt blocks

Vertiv OneCore targets 5–50 MW blocks with 96 to 944 racks. It suits colocation providers, cloud services operators and large programs that want standardized designs and repeatable modular deployments. At that scale, the utility, permitting and site program usually set the schedule, not the factory.

What is Vertiv OneCore?

Vertiv OneCore is a fully integrated, factory-assembled data center building block. The company positions OneCore for AI, high performance computing and high density colocation providers that want a pre-engineered IT hall, power train and thermal system from a single point of supply. Vertiv’s product materials describe it as designed for 10–250 MW+ data centers.

NVIDIA’s March 2026 GTC release named Vertiv OneCore Rubin DSX, a prefabricated converged infrastructure built using the NVIDIA Omniverse DSX Blueprint. Vertiv has also published a 142 kW-per-rack cooling and power reference architecture for NVIDIA GB300 NVL72, and says its CoolChip CDU has been qualified as NVIDIA DSX Ready.

Prefabricated infrastructure vs traditional stick-built construction

A Vertiv prefabricated data center moves assembly off site. Prefabricated components such as power skids, cooling modules and pre-integrated IT space are built and tested in a factory, so on-site assembly needs less field labor. The benefits buyers look for are:

  • Speed: factory work runs in parallel with site preparation, which can shorten deployment time.
  • Consistent quality: repeated, standardized designs are tested before shipment.
  • Reducing complexity: one supplier for the power and thermal train means a single point of support and fewer interfaces to coordinate.
  • Efficiency: power and thermal systems sized for a known IT load can run closer to their design point than a general-purpose room.
  • Scalability: a scalable block design lets you add data center capacity in steps, from a core data center to later phases.

The constraints are the same as for any modular design. Utility power, permits, foundations, heat rejection, fiber and commissioning still happen at the site. A module that arrives early but waits for a transformer has not shortened the deployment time. That is why the comparison that matters is the complete installed scope, not the factory lead time. Installation, integration with your control and monitoring systems, and the specific requirements of your workload still need an owner.

If your business already runs data centers and has an engineering team, buying a Vertiv modular data center directly can make sense: Vertiv OneCore or MegaMod gives you a data center solution with the vendor’s own support behind it. If you have a powered property but not a data center team, a project developer can carry the integration risk across the site, the GPU technologies and the delivery. Vertiv equipment could still be part of that solution, for example the CDUs or the power train inside a QIT-scoped facility.

Questions for any modular data center supplier

  • Which GPU platforms and rack densities is the design rated for, with liquid cooling and residual air?
  • What sits inside the module, and what power distribution, heat rejection and controls must the site provide?
  • Which deployment schedules are committed, and what event starts the clock?
  • Who supplies installation, commissioning and service, and how does the global service network reach your site?
  • How do advanced monitoring and automation integrate with your existing control systems?
  • At what load and climate are efficiency figures stated?

The same questions apply to Vertiv, other OEMs and QIT. See how Dell’s MDC range compares, or the wider list of modular data center companies.

How much does a modular data center cost?

This page does not quote Vertiv or QIT prices. A number per megawatt means little until you know whether it covers the enclosure only, the full power and thermal train, GPU hardware, site works and commissioning. A 1 MW prefabricated module and a 1 MW commissioned GPU site are different purchases.

Ask every supplier to price against the same boundary and list exclusions. The modular data center cost guide sets out six budget packages and an illustrative 1 MW energy calculation.
